Friends of Buford Park & Mt. Pisgah Harvest Hawthorn Berries with Friends of Buford Park & Mt. Pisgah Eugene Saturday, September 28, 2024 9am-12pm Join Friends of Buford Park & Mt. Pisgah for a morning of harvesting berries from invasive English hawthorn trees!
One of our most beloved Days of Caring projects, the annual hawthorn harvest is a great opportunity for families, business groups wanting to do some fun team building and others who like to combine conservation with fun!
Participants will pick the small, red berries from felled hawthorn trees and then help Friends staff break the branches down using loppers and hand pruners until what was once an invasive tree becomes a pile of sticks and buckets of beauitful berries.
Friends has partnered with local businesses who use fruit from these invasive species in their products, with a portion of the proceeds being donated back to Lane County Parks and Friends. Harvesting fruit from non-native english hawthorn stands has a two-fold benefit; it keeps this invasive species from spreading further across the endangered prairie and oak savanna's that call the park home while also contributing to making  for the community to enjoy!

Friends of Buford Park & Mt. Pisgah Protect Native Habitat with Friends of Buford Park & Mt. Pisgah Eugene Friday, September 27, 2024 9am-12pm Join Friends of Buford Park & Mt. Pisgah to stop the next generation of invasive weeds in their tracks!
Teasel is an invasive species that wreaks havoc on ecosystems in the upper Willamette Valley and across the west. These short-lived biennial plants flower in mid-summer and can produce thousands of seeds per plant. Volunteers will be joining knowledgeable group leaders to harvest the seed cones from adult teasel plants in the north part of Buford Park. This work is an extremely effective way of suppressing these noxious weeds and helps keep their populations in check!
This is a great social activity for larger groups that provides opportunities for building teamwork and rapport and has a big positive impact on the landscape.
